Connecting health and urban gardening in an app

January 24, 2018 - Dale Spoonemore shared the inspiring story of how he and his wife, Carrie, developed the From Seed to Spoon app at the January Data+Creativity Meetup.

Spoonemore explained how a personal battle with depression turned into revelations about how the food he ate affected his levels of anxiety. Once Dale and Carrie -- a nurse -- realized organic food had a huge, positive affect on Dale's symptoms, they turned their backyard into a garden. They blogged about everything they learned along the way, generating a following on YouTube. Finally, they learned to code so they could share their knowledge in an app and anyone else could learn about urban gardening and its health implications for free.

Dale has a compelling story and he gave an excellent breakdown of an effective product development process. Getting the app in front of people to get feedback at every stage was crucial for turning From Seed to Spoon into the user-friendly version that exists today. Spending time in the Thunder Launchpad business accelerator helped solidify their strategic and partnering plans.

Our next Data+Creativity Meetup will be compelling as well. A former WHO humanitarian crisis team leader will talk about his vision for how technology can be used to improve the way we respond to disease outbreak and refugee migration.
